Join Master Gardener and ACHS Chief Strategy Officer Erika Yigzaw via live internet stream or on campus as she takes you through the steps for a successful organic herb garden; from choosing the right plants, to tending the soil, to attracting the right insects, you’ll learn everything you need to start and maintain a successful garden. Bring your gardening gloves and a small trowel: we'll be planting echinacea in the ACHS herb garden! 

You’ll learn:

  • Gardening that mimics natural ecosystems
  • How to replenish the fertility of the soil naturally
  • Growing herbs without the use of synthetic chemical pesticides and fertilizers
  • How to get and keep nitrogen in your garden
  • How to make your own compost
  • Natural methods for weed and pest control

Erikaonmoana.jpgABOUT THE PRESENTER: Erika Yigzaw is Chief Strategy Officer at ACHS. She holds a Bachelors degree (B.Com.) in Commerce (Economics major) from the University of Otago; an LL.B. (first professional law degree) from the University of Otago Law School; and completed the Master Gardener program through Oregon State University in 2008.

Erika volunteers throughout the Portland area as a Master Gardener and is an advocate of sustainable living and green practices in both her personal and professional life. In her spare time, Erika and her family run a lavender farm in Sherwood, Oregon, where they also keep chickens, bees, horses, cats, dogs, fish, and occasionally fostered alpacas, llamas, and goats.
